In the spring of 1948 David Tarrence, pastor of the Church of God of Prophecy
in Sylacauga, Alabama, and a few faithful members from his church came to Alex
City, and in a little brush arbor on the side of the road started a revival that lasted
several weeks and eventually was the beginning of the Church of God of Prophecy
in Alexander City. Brother Tarrence and his members drove back and forth every
day for these services, which did not end at 8:00 p.m. They usually were still going
at l0:00 p.m. or later. People were coming from all over just to park outside the
tent and watch what was going on.
Charter members of the church are Fred Baker, Mozelle Baker, Betty Baker,
Claude Askew, and Robert Saffold. A few nights after the Alex City church was
chartered, two other ladies (Emma Nell Adams and Pauline Prophitt) joined the
congregation and became a part of the Church of God of Prophecy in Alex City.
In the last few years we have added six new Sunday School rooms, a new
Children’s Church, a new nursery, and two new restrooms. We have also paved
all of our parking area and purchased a new sign for our church, and we recently
remodeled our sanctuary and foyer.
We celebrated our 60th anniversary in 2008 and are still going strong. We thank
God for all his many blessings!
